Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa
400 Cannery Row
Monterey Plaza Hotel, Spa & Shops
Inspired by the opulence of the Hotel Del Monte, millionaire Hugh Tevis began construction in 1901 of an expansive estate
for his young bride on the rugged coastline along Ocean View Avenue on the outskirts of Monterey, not far from the exotic
Chinese fishing village at China Point. Tevis died on his honeymoon and the estate was sold to Montana mining magnate James
Murray. Murray's stepson, Stuart Haldorn, squired the palatial estate through the canning boom. In 1940, surrounded by the
bustle and smell of the industry, it was sold and divided into cannery and processing plant sites, pricipally for the Oxnard
Cannery of Sal Ferrante.
This historic site's return to elegance as the Monterey Plaza Hotel includes the replication of the original estate's hip-roof
style and, once again, access to the magnificent estate's private beach.
